Recorded back in December 2020, an edited 9 minute mix of Grid #1, Cello in D Minor was released on the Grids, Loops, & Jams LP in February 2021. At the time I wrote the following, which describes the method deployed to create the piece:
"This is the first piece I composed around a grid pattern. It comprises 9 notes in the D minor scale. Each note is bowed for approximately 1 to 1 & a half bars. The first note (C) is repeated every 8 bars, the second note (D) every 9 bars, & on up the scale (E every 10 bars, F every 11 bars, G every 12 bars, A every 13 bars, Bb every 14 bars, C every 15 bars, D every 16 bars). The middle note (G) is played an octave lower than the rest of the scale (I am not sure why, it just happened that way). The piece begins with every note being played simultaneously, and then the sequence described above plays out. The first two-note chord of the piece occurs on the 3rd playing of the lower C & the 2nd playing of the upper D. The 2nd dyad is the 4th upper C & the 3rd G. The 3rd dyad is on the 4th playing of the E & the 3rd playing of the upper C. Chords occur as the repetitions coincide. As the piece develops more complex chords are generated. The structure is entirely the result of the parameters described above."
I created 22 three minute sections, thinking I could offer them as individual bonus tracks for anyone who bought the album. Only one person bought it (thank you John Hobson). After 22 sections I finally realised that, if I were to carry the process through to its conclusion, ie when every note was played simultaneously a second time, the whole thing would be made up of potentially thousands of parts & would last for several days. I could never work out exactly how long the full piece would last, as the maths is too complicated. But I did realise that the final part would be a mirror image of the first part, and the central part would also show mirror symmetry around a rather sweet D Minor 7th chord. Hence, for this release, you can now hear the first 22 parts, plus the central section and the final section. (I did consider not including the 2nd part, as John Hobson bought it thinking he would be the only person ever to own that section, but I have so few listeners I am sure John won't mind sharing.)
At some point in the future, when technical know-how & equipment allows, I would like to re-record this (perhaps with someone who can actually play the cello). I would like to programme it (rather than endlessly cutting and pasting as I did with this version) so that, if one desired, the whole piece could be played out to its conclusion. I am also toying with the idea of writing the score out in traditional musical notation (or at least an edited version of it) for either 4 cellos, or a string quartet.
